Thanks to the dedication and hard work of local business owner and 4-H volunteers Matt and Rebecca Tufenkian, Altadena Foothills 4-H has its own plot. This will allow our community youth to continue their hands-on learning about gardening in one of Altadena's most beautiful spots! By getting their own community plot, our 4-H youth are also learning that their participation in the local community is valued.
On April 14th, Altadena Foothill 4-H met for their monthly meeting, and to discuss their upcoming community service project. One of 4-H’s principles is to make a positive impact in the community, so members gathered to vote on helping homeless and low-income families in small, but meaningful, ways. Partnering with a local food bank, Friends in Deed, Club Officers and Club Leaders agreed make care packages. The typical participants at our monthly gathering tripled in size to bring supplies that made over 75 packages. Bags full of toiletries were then sent with the Club Officers to be delivered to the pantry. Several days later, four of our Club Officers (plus a handful of club volunteers and leaders) spent a few hours shelving and sorting produce that had just arrived and lending a few extra hands to the shelter. After a thorough tour of the pantry, we were able to understand the process and trace our impact of the community service project.
This small gesture that only required a couple dozen volunteers and donations supplied by generous families proved that kindness can be shared by both the giver and the receiver.
