2018 - 2019 Year-Round Projects

Horses I

Ages 9 and up

Leaders: Lisa Bailey & Meredith McKenzie

Time: 4:00-5:30 on third Thursdays: 9/20, 10/18, 11/15, 12/13, 1/17, 2/21, 3/21, 4/18, 5/16

Place: Altadena Stables

Club dues: $20

Learn about these amazing animals, how to read their behavior and likewise, how to behave around them. Learn the basics of horse care and build your knowledge of different breeds. Optional horse related field trips will also be offered. There may be an additional fee for these trips. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or paddock boots required. Helmets for occasional use provided. Note: riding is NOT a regular part of Horses Project.

Dairy Goat Showmanship

Club dues: $20

Build on your knowledge of dairy goats by raising and showing your own animal. Participants must provide their own goat and commit to showing at a minimum of one competition.

Place: Altadena Community Garden (our own 4-H plot!)

Learn about the connection between eating and the land and how to grow edibles. The plot at Altadena Community Garden is a trove of opportunities to see food plants from many cultures!

High School Age

Urban Agriculture

Ages 10 and up

Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon; 10/14, 11/18, 12/16, 1/13, 2/17, 3/17, 4/14, 4/27-28, 5/5
Place: McDonalds' Urban Farm
Club dues: $20

Urban Poultry, Farm to Table Cooking, Holiday Pie Making & Tablescaping, Farmers Market Entrepreneurship, Preserving Canning, Science in Nature (drawing), Goats 101, Citizen Science (iNaturalist app training and prepare for City Nature Challenge 2019), City Nature Challenge hikes, and basic vegetable gardening and seed saving. 

Leadership

You have the power to do great things for our community. This project is for all club officers, as well as any youth who enjoy organizing, collaborating and managing events or activities. Members will identify their strengths, learn how to thoughtfully present themselves and their ideas, and how to work as a team.

What's the difference between a want and a need? How can you set realistic money goals and work towards them? How do you keep track of money coming and going? You can even learn how to manage an account, and help the club treasurer.

Public Speaking

Ages 12 and up
Leader: Melinda Fayette and Kirsten Hansen

Place: TENTATIVELY Altadena United Methodist Church
Club dues: $20
Love speaking in public? Hate speaking in public? This project has room for both! Participants will learn to be a poised, polished public speakers by creating their own presentation on a topic they are passionate about, as well as fun (really!) public speaking games and activities. Ready to take your presentation on the road? Participants will have the opportunity to compete in 4-H Presentations at the club, county, area, or state level (competition not required for participation in this project.)

Aquaponics

Ages 12 and up

Learn how aquaponics works, how to choose the best fish, which plants to grow, and how to keep the ecosystem in balance.



Make Your
Own Skincare

Ages 9 and up

Steps to enroll

Youth Members: except for during enrollment in September and January, do not enroll online before checking with the Club Leader.


  1. Go to www.4honline.com Choose California and make an account for family, or login using your account from the previous year. 
  2. Enter all required information. Choose the county: Los Angeles County; Choose the club: Altadena Foothills; Choose your project(s). 
  3. The Club Leader will send you an email stating your enrollment request was received, and that you have a place in the project. If the project is full, you can be put on a waiting list. The email will contain an attendance contract (print and complete it), a fee total and a mailing address. 
  4. Send everything to the Club Leader. The envelope should include
    1. Attendance Contract (Keep your copy, send the club's copy only.)
    2. Your check for the total, including registration and fees. (Please write to "Altadena Foothills 4-H Club.")
  5. Once your check and form are received, you will get a confirmation email from the Club Leader.

Adult Volunteers:

Our volunteer vetting process ensures the safety of all children.


  1. Contact the Club Leader. You will receive an online form to submit your contact information and interest to the 4-H County Coordinator.
  2. Complete an online orientation.
  3. Meet with the friendly County Coordinator.
  4. Complete a background check.
  5. Go to www.4honline.com Choose California and make an account for family, or login using your account from the previous year. 
  6. Enter all required information. Choose the county: Los Angeles County; Choose the club: Altadena Foothills; Choose Project Leader OR Resource Leader.
